She is everything to him. He tells her that kissing her is like touching the sun. But she doesn’t love him. I’d settle for the moon, he says

Acrid smoke rises into the sky and blends with the clouds and there’s a tornado look to it and all he can think is, I’ve never been happier.

His eyes hurt but he won’t admit it, not while she’s taking her shirt in front of him. Tell me what you see, she coos. His eyes hurt so much

They watch the planes take off, the poetry of it, and he leans into her and gives her a kiss. I wish you were on that plane, she tells him.

She brings him breakfast in bed. Gets the paper. Fluffs his pillows. And then he realizes her mistake. I said Pampers, he says. Not pampered

As he boards the plane, he knows he’ll never see her again. At cruising altitude, the captain announces engine failure. He smiles wistfully.

That was the time his life changed. When he saw her. And without speaking, knew. And when he tripped on his own shoelace, landing in the mud
